If you’re updating your resume for the New Year, you may be wondering just how you can make yours stand out in 2017. Resume trends change over time, and what looked impressive just a few years ago can seem dated by today’s standards. If you want to create a new resume that will set you apart, consider following these updated resume trends:

Include a Value Proposition

When you’re on the lookout for a new job, hiring managers want to know one thing: How will you benefit their organization? A value proposition gives the reader the number one reason why a company should want to interview you. What is the most compelling reason a hiring manger would look at your resume and immediately reach out to schedule an interview? Show how you can provide a value that no other candidate can offer. Try to limit your value proposition to one sentence in order to keep it succinct. The idea is to generate interest and leave the reader wanting to learn more.

List Experience by Relevance

Most job seekers list their previous experience in chronological order. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this tactic, it’s not always the best approach, especially if you are trying to break into a new field or get back into an area you worked in prior to your most recent job.  Tailor your resume to list your most relevant experience first so show hiring managers right off the bat just how qualified you are for the position.  Label the section, “Relevant Experience.” Any jobs that do not fall into this bucket should be listed in a separate section titled, “Other Professional Experience.”

Graphic Elements – Callout Boxes and Breakaway Text

A visually engaging resume will help capture and maintain the reader’s interest. Elements like callout boxes and breakaway text help guide the reader’s eye to key points you want to highlight. When you read a news article and you see text that is larger than everything else on the page, your eye goes to that element. Remember callout boxes and breakaway text are compelling snippets.  They might include impressive statistics, percentages, or other important information that you want hiring managers to see right off the bat.

Incorporate Video

Video resumes will never replace written resumes, but they can be a unique way to help you stand out from the crowd. With the help of a professional video resume consultant, create a short, 30-second video resume or introduction. Place it on your personal website and include a live link on your written resume. This allows the hiring manager to easily click through to see your content.  Videos can help create a personal connection with the potential employer and lets them see your personality – something that is difficult to convey on paper.  Just remember to always keep it professional.
